Area had 583 deaths in past decade It’s true — Orlando is the deadliest city in America for pedestrians, with 583 deaths in the past decade. Metro Orlando tops the list of cities with a calculated pedestrian danger index of 244.28, four times more than the national PDI, which sits at 52.2, according to a report from Smart Growth America. Tampa-St. Petersburg, Jacksonville and Miami follow close behind. PDI gives an indication of the likelihood of a person on foot being hit by a vehicle and killed. It’s based off the share of local commuters who walk to work, which is the best measure of how many people are likely to be out walking each day. The most recent data for pedestrian fatalities in the past five years is also used for calculations.
